TROY, N.Y. – Powered by a goal in each half, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team defeated Ithaca College, 2-0, in non-conference action on Renwyck Field. The win marked the sixth straight shutout of the season for the Engineers, who improve to 5-0-1 on the season. The Bombers are now 2-2-2 overall.
Senior captain
Lincoln Field (Contoocook, NH/Hopkinton) got things going early for Rensselaer, scoring his team-leading fourth goal of the season, off a penalty kick in the 18th minute. The Bombers were called for the foul against RPI defender
Brad Shelofsky (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), which set up the penalty kick for the Engineers.
Ithaca, which held a 6-4 shot advantage in the first half, had a number of chances to get on the board in the opening 45 minutes, but could not solve Rensselaer netminder
Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport), who had three saves.
Junior midfielder Jeff Geyer (Hebron, CT/Rham) had the Bombers best chance to score in the 41st minute after he found the ball at midfield and set a hard shot through an open hole at Penny, who made a diving save to his left to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Engineers' midfielder
Tom Kelly (Shrewsbury, England/Shrewsbury School) made it a two-goal advantage for the home team in the second half, after he rifled a cross from senior
Sean Fleury (Princeton, MA/Wachusett Regional) past a diving Justin Parlapiano (Stafford Springs, CT/Stafford) into the right corner.
Rookie Ryan Norland (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) nearly got Ithaca on the board in the 77th minute after he plowed through three RPI defenders for a shot at the goal. The ball was deflected at the last minute after the kick, giving Penny the chance to make the save.
RPI, which has yet to allow a goal in 560:00 minutes played in 2009, saw Penny make four saves and improve his personal record to 4-0-1. Parlapiano stopped five shots in the loss for the Bombers.
The Engineers held the slight advantage in total shots with an 11-9 margin, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. RPI also had four corner kicks in the contest, while Ithaca had none.
Rensselaer opens Liberty League play next weekend on the road when it faces Hamilton and fourth-ranked Hobart on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (2pm), respectively. Ithaca is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Marywood at 4pm.
