SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Senior captain
Lincoln Field (Contoocook, NH/Hopkinton) scored twice and
Jabel Prom (Sandy Spring, MD/Sherwood) and
Julian Coy (Bristow, VA/Brentsville District) tallied once apiece as the Rensselaer men's soccer team opened the 2009 campaign with a 4-0 win over Worcester State in the Union College Classic. Junior
Alex Penny (Northport, NY/Northport) made four saves for RPI, which outshot the Lancers, 27-8.
Field opened the match, which was very chippy as RPI was assessed one yellow card to Worcester State's nine, with an unassisted score at 26:39, as he cut into the middle and drove a low shot left of Lancer goalkeeper Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA). The Engineers took advantage of a foul early in the second half when Field scored on a penalty shot.
At 77:21, Prom's first of the year came when he took a cross from
Sean Fleury (Princeton, MA/Wachusett Regional) and tapped it in inside the left post. Coy capped off the scoring when he took a pass from
Zach Fane (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh)and deposited the ball around the left side of the keeper.
Although Penny made just four saves, two were outstanding stops for the Engineers. With 13:03 left in the first half he made a stunning save and later made a diving stop near the left post off a blast from David Gustafson (Webster, MA) with 40:09 remaining. He finished with one save in the first half and three more in the second. Worcester State's Wiga stopped eight shots, including six in the second half.
The Engineers return to action on Saturday afternoon at 3:30pm against John Jay in their second game of the Union Classic.
