TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team got goals from seven different student-athletes, including two from senior
Jabel Prom, as RPI defeated John Jay, 8-0, in the Union College Classic. The Engineers improve to 2-0, while the Bloodhounds fall to 0-2.
RPI took the lead when sophomore
Jordan Ward (Derry, NH/Pinkerton Academy) scored on a cross that he tapped inside the right post at 15:56 before Prom (Sandy Spring, MD/Sherwood) scored the next two goals within five minutes of each other late in the first half. His first came off a pass from classmate
Lincoln Field (Contoocook, NH/Hopkinton) at 30:42. His second came on a rebound at 35:07. Sophomore
Julian Coy (Bristow, VA/Brentsville District) scored under four minutes later and RPI led 4-0 at the half.
Rensselaer held a 23-1 advantage in shots at halftime and saw the margin increase to 43-1 by game's end. Four of RPI's second half shots found the back of the net.
In addition to Prom, sophomore
Alex Papageorgis (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) and senior
Ben Russell (Rochester, NY/Penfield) also had multiple points. Papageorgis had a goal and an assist and Russell picked up two assists.
Two goalies shared the shutout, including freshman
Ari Baskous (Anchorage, AK/East Anchorage), who played the first 72:03 of the contest.
Rensselaer returns to action on Friday when it plays New York University at the Manhattanville Tournament. Game time is 5pm.
