TROY, N.Y. – Freshman Louis Leblanc (Kirland, PQ/Omaha) jammed home the game-tying goal with 2.3 seconds remaining in regulation as the Harvard men's hockey team came back from a 3-1, third period deficit to tie Rensselaer, 3-3, at the Houston Field House. With the draw, the Engineers move to 13-11-2 overall and 6-5-1 in ECAC Hockey, while the Crimson are now 5-10-3 (5-5-3 ECACH).
Down two goals, 2:30 into the third period, Harvard pulled to within 3-2 on a shot from the left hash-mark by senior Doug Rogers (Watertown, MA/St. Sebastian's). Classmate Chad Morin (Auburn, NY/Sioux City) threw the puck towards goal, but it was blocked down in front of Rogers, who found the back of net.
Harvard pulled junior goaltender Kyle Richter (Calgary, AB/Brooks) – who had replaced starter Ryan Caroll to start the third period – with just over a minute left in regulation. With the extra attacker, sophomore Alex Killorn (Montreal, PQ/Deerfield) took a shot was turned away by RPI sophomore netminder
Allen York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks), but the rebound was put home by Leblanc with less than three ticks on the clock.
Freshman Jerry D'Amigo (Binghamton, NY/U.S. National U-18 Team) put the Engineers on the scoreboard first, on a tight-angle shot from the left circle at 8:28 of the first period. Junior
Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) slid the puck ahead to D'Amigo who fired a shot into the top of the net. Freshman
Brandon Pirri (Toronto, ON/Georgetown Raiders) was credited with the second helper.
RPI made it 2-0, when senior
Paul Kerins (Weston, ON/North York Rangers) wristed one off the glove of Carroll and in from the left side. Kerins' eighth of the year and second in as many nights came at 19:52 of the second frame.
The Crimson struck quickly in the third (1:11 into the frame), when Killorn picked up a loose puck in the slot and beat York to the low left corner. The fore-check of Leblanc led to a turnover in the Engineers' zone and allowed Killorn to capitalize on his team-leading 12th tally of the season.
Freshman Marty O'Grady (London, ON/Wellington Dukes) answered 51 seconds later to push the Engineers lead back to two goals (3-1). Picking up a rebound from just outside the Crimson crease, O'Grady backhanded a shot past Richter for his seventh marker of the year.
York (10-9-2) finished with 26 saves on the afternoon, including 14 in the third period and overtime. Richter (2-8-2) earned the draw for Harvard, totaling 10 stops – all of which came in the final 25 minutes of play. Carroll made 11 saves on the 13 shots he faced.
The Engineers are back on the ice next weekend, when they visit Brown and sixth-ranked Yale on Friday (7pm) and Saturday (7pm), respectively.
