POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's swimming and diving teams took on Vassar College in dual meet action on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers men picked up at 215-67 win, while the women swam to a rare 149-149 tie against the Brewers.
For the third straight week, freshman Miguel Hummel (Pittsburgh, PA/Fordham Prep) had claimed victory in the diving events, winning the 1-meter event with a score of 244.50 points. He also won off the 3-meter board with a mark of 255.45 points.
Sophomore Ben LeRose (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) also performed well for the Engineers, picking up wins in the 200-freestyle (1:52.49) and the 200-backstroke (2:05.10). Additionally, he was a member of the 400-freestyle relay that captured victory in a time of 3:29.33. Other members of the 400-free relay included junior Alex Rohr (Rexford, NY/Niskayuna), freshman David James (Bakersfield, CA/Liberty) and senior Brandon McDowell (Alexandria, VA/West Potomac).
Rohr and McDowell also helped the 400-medley relay team to a win in a time of 3:51.27. The other two relay members were senior captain Alex Updegrove (Carson City, NV/Carson) and rookie Jared Gordon (Coatesville, PA/Coatesville Area).
Other swimmers with success on the afternoon for the RPI men included sophomore Dan Messmer (Medford, NJ/Shawnee), who won the 500-free (5:14.37). Junior Chris Hall (Villanova, PA/Friends' Central School) won the 100-breast (1:04.36), while senior Julian Schott (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) won the 100-free (49.95) and the 200-individual medley (2:06.65).
On the women's side, the meet came down to the wire in the final two events to produce the draw. Helping the day's efforts for RPI was sophomore Tina Belletete (Winchendon, MA/Gardner) who won the 1000-free (10:54.41), the 500-free (5:26.74) and the 200-back (2:17.38).
Junior captain Carly Antonucci (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) won the 100-breast (1:11.32) and also claimed victory in the 200-breast (2:33.53). Additionally, she helped lead the 400-medley relay team to a win with a time of 4:13.34. Also on the relay squad were junior Eva Skorupka (North Andover, MA/Central Catholic) and sophomores Christina Provenza (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) and Mairead Lyons (Leominster, MA/Notre Dame Academy).
Senior diver Grace Fitzgerald (Manchester, NH/Manchester) also performed well in the diving events, winning the 3-meter for the third straight week with a mark of 220.42 points. She also placed second off the 1-meter board with a score of 227.09 points.
Rensselaer is back in the pool on Sunday, hosting Hartwick at Robison Pool (1pm).
