Softball Beaten by TCNJ, 12-4; Haverford, 2-1

Bach strikes out five Fords, but drops one-run afternoon contest

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Rensselaer softball fell to The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) this morning 12-4, before being edged by Haverford, 2-1. Junior righthander Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) pitched well in defeat, allowing just two runs on six hits over 5.0 innings, while striking out five. With the loses the Engineers move to 2-6 on the season.

In game one, TCNJ scored all the runs they would need in the top of the first inning, plating eight before RPI even came to bat. The Engineers answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, but were shut out the rest of the way. Junior captain Genevieve Falco (Seaford, NY/Seaford) went 1 for 3 at the plate with a double, a run scored and three runs batted in.

From the circle, junior Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH/Gilford) pitched 4.0 innings, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) on nine hits, with three strikeouts. Bach threw the final 3.0 innings surrendering one run.

Game two against Haverford went scoreless until the Fords scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the 5th to take the lead. The Engineers got one back in the top of the 6th, but could not pull even, despite out hitting their opponents 9-6.

Bach threw the first 5.0 innings of the contest, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Bua came in for the final frame, and picked up one strikeout. At the plate, freshman Gillian McCarthy (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) went 2 for 4, while classmate Caitlin McGivern (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame) ended up 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Senior captain Becky Bailey (Rome, NY/Holland Patent) went 2 for 3, while Falco was 1 for 3 with a run.

The Engineers are back on the diamond on Thursday, when they take on Pine Manor College (11:30am) and Lesley University (1:30pm).
