TROY, N.Y. – Williams College broke open a close game with five straight goals in the second half of action and held on to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 10-7, on Tuesday evening. Led by a game-high four goals from Meera Sivalingam, the 12th-ranked Ephs improve to 1-1 on the season. The Engineers fall to 1-2 overall.
Locked in a 5-5 tie after the first thirty minutes of play, Rensselaer pulled ahead as senior captain
Whitney Kukol (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) scored off a nice pass from classmate
Sam Fennessey (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs) at 24:15.
The visiting Ephs wasted little time in pulling things even as Sivalingam (Philadelphia, PA/Hotchkiss School) tallied, unassisted, less than 30 seconds later. That goal spurred a quick surge for Williams as they pulled out to a four-goal advantage (10-6) over the next 20 minutes. Leading the way was freshman Sam Weinstein (Marblehead, MA/Deerfield Academy), who scored two goals during that stretch.
Rensselaer attempted to pull back in late in the game and were able to close the deficit to three (10-7) on rookie
Alissa Peterson's (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard) goal, but could not complete the comeback as time expired.
Williams took control to start the game as Sivalingam netted three of the Ephs first four goals to give the visitors a 4-1 lead at 11:03. The Engineers rallied as Peterson scored and junior
Afton Marshall (Windham, NH/Salem) netted a pair to pull things even at 4-all with 5:23 left to play in the opening half.
Senior Tracey Ferriter (Winchester, MA/Noble & Greenough) made it a 5-4 lead for Williams nearing the two minute mark, but junior
Stephanie Caouette (Wynantskill, NY/Columbia) collected a pass from Marshall to score the equalizer at 1:23.
In addition to Sivalingam, Williams saw Weinstein finish with three goals. Ferriter had two, while junior netminder Julia Schreiber (Cockeysville, MD/McDonogh School) picked up the win in goal with seven saves.
For Rensselaer, Peterson posted a team-high three goals and added an assist. Marshall finished with two goals and an assist, while Caouette and Kukol each had a goal. In net, senior
Ariana Hood (Severn, MD/Old Mill) stopped seven shots in the loss.
Rensselaer is back in action on Sunday when it hosts #20 Nazareth at Renwyck Field. Game time is set for 12pm. Williams returns to play on Saturday, hosting NESCAC-rival Bates at 12pm.
