Softball Falls to Behrend; Edged by Brandeis, 7-6 in 10 Innings

Engineers fall to Judges, after dropping 6-0 contest to Penn State-Behrend

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Rensselaer softball team fell to Penn State-Behrend this morning, 6-0, before being edged by Brandeis, 7-6, in 10 innings. The win for the Judges was their first of the season (1-0), while the Engineers fall to 0-4. Three players recorded multiple hits for RPI in its narrow loss to Brandeis.

In the game one, Penn State-Behrend scored runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. RPI junior pitcher Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH/Gilford) worked the first 3.0 innings of the game, allowing two runs. She stuck out three, while walking three. Classmate Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) threw 4.0 innings of relief, surrendering four earned runs on six hits, with a strikeout and a walk.

Offensively, junior Alysa Rochminski (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) was perfect at the plate, going 1 for 1 with a double and two walks.

Game two on the day saw RPI mount a late comeback, scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-3. The two clubs traded a pair of runs in the eighth and single runs in the ninth, before the Judges platted the long tally in the 10th.

Freshman Gillian McCarthy (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a run batted in against Brandeis, while sophomore Sara Heller (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) collected two hits in four at bats, with a run and a sacrifice. Classmate Kelly Erkert (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) finished 2 for 5 with a double.

From the circle, Bach went 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with a strikeout. Bua took the loss pitching 8.2 innings, giving up four runs on nine hits.
