WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Rensselaer softball team battled back from a 6-1 loss and a 7-0 first inning deficit in the second game and the Engineers tied the Ephs, 12-12, in non-league action. Freshman
Gillian McCarthy led RPI in the nightcap by going 5 for 5 with two runs and two RBI. Rensselaer is now 12-13-1, while Williams is 10-17-1.
In the second game, the Engineers fell behind by seven runs in the first inning but fought back to take a 12-8 lead in the sixth inning. Williams scored four runs of its own in its half of the inning and the game was called a draw.
In addition to the offensive prowess from McCarthy (Worthington, OH / Thomas Worthington), RPI got three hits from senior
Becky Bailey (Rome, NY / Holland Patent) and
Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA / Gwynedd Mercy Academy). Bailey also had three runs and three RBI, while Bach had a home run with two RBI. She earned the tie from the circle.
The first game was tight until the bottom of the sixth inning when Williams scored four runs to turn a 2-1 lead into a 6-1 advantage. The Ephs got multiple hits from three players.
RPI saw Bach suffer the loss. Offensively, she and
Sara Heller (Guilderland, NY / Guilderland) had multiple hits.
