Softball Splits Doubleheader at Castleton State

RPI downs Spartans, 11-0; Fall in game two, 3-1

CASTLETON, Vt. - Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA) hurled a five inning shutout and went 3-for-3 with four RBI's and one run scored for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in game one and Taylor Lively (Greenfield, MA) commanded the strike zone in game two with six punchouts as the Castleton State College softball team fell in game 11-0 but rebounded in game two 3-1 on Friday afternoon in Castleton. The Spartans move to 7-10 on the season. The Engineers move to 8-11 overall.

In game one, Bach yielded just three hits, two walks and 11 strikeouts for the win. Hilary Bemis (Crown Point, NY) suffered the loss on five innings pitched allowing 13 hits, 11 runs (10 earned), six walks and one strikeout.

First baseman Gillian McCarthy (Worthington, OH) and third baseman Genevieve Falco (Seaford, NY) also paced the RPI offense collecting three hits apiece. McCarthy went 3-for-3 with four runs driven in and two runs and Falco went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI's and one run scored.

Bach got the Engineers' offense started in the top of the first inning with an RBI single that plated leadoff hitter Becky Bailey (Rome,NY) for a 1-0 lead.

In the second, RPI put the game out of reach with a six-run inning. McCarthy notched a two-run double to right field, Bach cranked a two-run double to right center field off of the baggy and Falco crushed a two-run homer to center field giving the Engineers a 7-0 lead.

RPI tacked on four more runs in the fifth as McCarthy drove home two runs on a single and Bach and Falco also picked RBI base knocks to make it 11-0.

In game two, Bemis provided the only runs Castleton needed in the bottom of the first inning with a three-run homer down the left field line.

Lively kept the Engineers off-balance at the plate all game pitching seven innings allowing just three hits, one earned run, and no walks.

Caylee Fleury (Barre, VT) led off the first inning with a single to left field, shortstop Megan Blongy (Rutland, VT) followed with a single then Bemis mashed a 3-1 fastball deep down the left field line just inside the foul pole for a 3-0 lead.

RPI broke up Lively's chance at a shutout in the fifth inning as Sara Heller (Guilderland, NY) got things going with a single to right field.

Samantha Paulding (Baldwinsville, NY) notched a single and after a groundout advanced both runners Alysa Rochminski (Schenectady, NY) fouled out down the third baseline on a beautiful catch by Blongy that plated Heller from third.

Engineers' starter Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH) was dealt the loss throwing five innings, yielding eight hits, three earned runs, one walk and seven strikeouts. Bach finished the contest pitching one inning with one strikeout.

Castleton returns to action tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in doubleheader action against Thomas. Rensselaer hosts Hamilton for a twinbill on Monday at Doris Robison Field (3:30pm).
