Day One Results
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Through the first day of action at the 2010 ECAC Outdoor Championships, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's track & field teams have performed well. The men, led by NCAA Provisional performances from two student-athletes, sits in ninth of 24 teams, while the women are 14th of 21 squads.
Highlighting the first day of competition was a third place finish by senior
Erik Whiting (Fultonville, NY/Fonda-Fultonville), who finished third overall in the hammer throw with a distance of 55.24 meters. That mark was his seventh consecutive NCAA Provisional distance this season. Classmate
Justin Metzger (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) also had a solid outing, finishing fourth overall in the pole vault with an NCAA Provisional height of 4.70 meters.
Sophomore
Alex Morin (Mendon, MA/Nipmuc Regional) also performed well, placing fourth or higher in the first five events of the Decathlon. Among his top performances were in the 100-dash (11.70) and the high jump (1.85 meters) which he finished second in both.
Rounding out the performances was junior
Alec Marshall (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley), who qualified for the 110-meter hurdles final on Friday, with a second-place finish (15.05) in the prelims.
On the women's side, rookie
Marie Ferro (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) continued her success from the New York State Championships, finishing fifth in the 10,000-m run with a time of 37:08.37. Sophomore
Morgan Danner (McLean, VA/Langley) was 10th in the pole vault (3.25m) to round out the finishers for the women.
