HAMILTON, N.Y. – Rensselaer came away with a doubleheader sweep of Rochester on Sunday, winning game one, 9-8, on a tiebreaker, before posting a 8-3 victory in the nightcap with the help of five unearned runs. With the wins, the Engineers move to 3-3 in Liberty League play and 16-15-1 overall. Rochester is now 4-4 in the conference and 22-17 overall.
Sunday's doubleheader was played at the Eaton Street Complex in Hamilton, N.Y., the home field for Colgate University. Last week's games at Rochester were postponed due to weather, forcing the neutral site contests.
Rochester, RPI, Union, and Skidmore will all take part in the Liberty League championships next weekend at Union. RPI and Skidmore will play a makeup doubleheader in midweek. The outcome of that series will determine final pairings for the double-elimination tournament.
Tied 3-3 after the first inning of play in game one, Rochester found itself grabbing the advantage in the bottom of the third as Kim Grimes hit a two-run shot to make it a 5-4 Yellowjakets lead. It was the 10th home run of the year for Grimes, one shy of matching the single-season record.
Winning pitcher
Jen Bach's solo home run got RPI even at 5-5 in the fifth inning and a double, a sacrifice fly, and a single put the Engineers on top, 8-5, in the seventh.
Rochester came back in its half of the seventh, tying the game and nearly winning outright after Erin Clark singled to score a pair of runs. She took second on the throw as M.C. Wagner tried to take the lead by crossing the plate, but was tagged out trying to score making it an 8-8 game.
Heading into extra innings, it was RPI who came out on top as
Nicole Batan's ground out to the pitcher scored
Sara Heller, who was placed on second to start the inning, as per the official rules.
Game two saw RPI score two runs in the top of the first and add another one in the second for a 3-0 advantage. Rochester staged a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the margin to 3-2, but the Engineers came roaring back in the bottom of the seventh as
Caitlin McGivern doubled and
Gillian McCarthy reached on a fielder's choice. Following a walk to
Genevieve Falco, Heller singled to bring home the three base runners after a throwing error by the centerfielder.
Junior
Felicia Bua shut down the Yellowjackets in the bottom of the inning to secure the RPI victory. She finished with three runs allowed on 10 hits through 7.0 innings.
