Skidmore lost to Union in the first game (7-1) and defeated Rochester (1-0) in an elimination game on Saturday.
With the score tied 2-2 midway through the sixth inning in the first game, the Engineers scored two runs, the first on a double by
Sara Heller (Guilderland, NY / Guilderland) and the second on Paulding's third hit of the day, a single to shortstop. Rochester managed just a single in the seventh inning as Bua closed the door.
Rensselaer's second game of the game saw the opponent score four runs in the first inning, two in the second and three in the third for a commanding lead. The Engineers got a run back on a solo home run from Heller in the second inning, but Union rebounded once more, tacking on three more runs in their own half of the third.
Despite a 9-1 deficit, RPI continued to fight in the late innings, putting up three runs in the top of the fifth to cut the margin to 9-4. With two on in the inning, junior
Genevieve Falco (Seaford, NY/Seaford) singled to right to load the bases. Heller came up big once again, singling to left to bring in the run. Freshman
Sheena McNeil (Urbana, IL/Urbana) capitalized with a two-run double to left center, but the Engineers were unable to get any closer in the game.
Junior
Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) shouldered the loss for RPI, surrendering six runs on nine hits in 2.0 innings. Bua came on in relief, giving up four runs (1 earned) on four hits.
