SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Junior
Jen Bach hit three home runs on the afternoon to become the school's single season record holder but it was not enough for the Rensselaer softball team as it lost in the Championship Round of the inaugural Liberty League Tournament. Bach hit two home runs in a 5-4 win over Skidmore but RPI fell to Union, 6-5, in the second game despite her one dinger .
Union won the second game on a three-run home run in the seventh inning to improve to 29-8 and capture the title. RPI concludes the season with a 19-18-1 record and a second place finish in the four-team, double elimination event.
In the win over Skidmore, Bach (Lansdale, PA / Gwynedd Mercy Academy) was 3 for 4 with two home runs - her 10th and 11th of the season - three runs scored and four RBI. The Liberty League's Player of the Year also collected the victory from the circle.
Gillian McCarthy (Worthington, OH / Thomas Worthington), the league's Rookie of the Year, also collected three hits, going 3 for 4 with a run scored, while sophomore
Sara Heller Heller (Guilderland, NY / Guilderland) finished with a pair of singles, including one to left field to score Bach with the winning run in the seventh inning.
RPI jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and a 4-2 advantage after three innings before Skidmore rallied back with single runs in the fourth and the sixth innings. In the Rensselaer half of the seventh, McCarthy and Bach both singled to start the inning. Following a fielder's choice and a wild pitch, Heller singled to left field for the victory.
In Rensselaer's second game, the Engineers fought back from a 3-1 deficit with a four-run seventh inning to hold a 5-3 advantage. Bach highlighted the scoring with a two-run home run.
The homestanding Dutchwomen got the three runs they needed for victory on a three-run shot by Nina Cervini with one out in the bottom of the inning. Bach suffered the loss for RPI

The Engineers placed three student-athletes on the All-Tournament Team, led by Bach. Heller and freshman
Sheena McNeil (Urbana, IL / Urbana) were also selected.
