SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - RPI got first half goals from senior forward Bryce Hutchinson (Elverson, PA) and senior forward Blake Adams (Cedar Grove, NJ) and Alex Penny (Northport, NY) stopped one shot as the Rensselaer men's soccer team began the 2010 season with a 2-0 victory over Worcester State in Union College Classic.
The #21 Engineers face Cazenovia at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Union, while Worcester State(1-1) faces host Union at 6 p.m.
At 10:34, RPI's Hutchinson collected a rebound after a shot from Liezer Esquenazi (Houston, TX). RPI took a 2-0 lead that eventually held up for the first half. Adams scored at 28:57 when he picked up a rebound off a free kick by teammate Benjamin Poser (Scotts Valley, CA) and shot it in from straight out in front.
The Engineers had two other solid opportunities in the first half, but Wilga came up big. He dove to his right to stop a drive from Adam Updegrove (Carson City, NV) at 39:07 and stopped a rebound shot by Matthew Dubois (Ashburnham, MA) off a shot off the crossbar at 37:14.
Worcester State had a direct kick opportunity midway through the second half, their best chance at cracking the scoreboard.
RPI had a 26-1 shot advantage for the contest.
