TROY, N.Y. – Junior netminder
Allen York stopped all 36 shots he faced and senior
Tyler Helfrich had a hand in all three goals as the 10th-ranked Rensselaer men's hockey team shut out Brown, 3-0, at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Engineers improve to 16-6-3 overall and 8-5-0 in ECAC Hockey play. The Bears fall to 7-9-4 (5-7-1).
York (Wetaskiwin, AB/Camrose Kodiaks) made double-digit saves in all three periods, including 14 in the second stanza. Helfrich (Calgary, AB/Prince George Spruce Kings) assisted on the first two Engineers' goals before flipping home an empty-netter with 2:15 left in the third.
With a 5-on-3 man-advantage, senior
Chase Polacek (Edina, MN/Academy of Holy Angels) scored what would turn out to be the eventual game-winning goal – his fourth in as many games – at 14:23 of the opening frame. Taking a feed from Helfrich at the bottom of the left circle, Polacek beat Brown junior goaltender Michael Clemente (Great Falls, VA) short-side. Freshman
Brock Higgs (Kingston, ON/Kingston Voyageurs) earned the second assist.
The goal for Polacek was his 15th of the season and nation-leading seventh game-winner.
Rensselaer made it 2-0 at 18:13 of the first, when senior
Bryan Brutlag (Lakeville, MN/Academy of Holy Angles) re-directed a Polacek shot past Clemente for his seventh of the year. Helfrich also earned a helper on the Engineers' second power-play tally.
York made a number of big stops in the second, including an acrobatic glove save on Bears' junior Jack Maclellan (Calgary, AB) in the waning second of the period.
Sophomore CJ Lee (Staten Island, NY/Green Bay Gamblers) found Helfrich on a pass up the left wing boards before the winger backhanded home an empty-net goal for his 12th tally of the season.
York (15-6-3) earned his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career. Clemente (5-7-4) finished with 17 saves at the other end of the ice. RPI scored on two of its first three power-plays, before ending up 2 for 5. Brown was 0 for 5 on the man-advantage.
The Engineers return to action tomorrow night, when they host top-ranked Yale in the 34th-annual Big Red Freakout! at the Houston Field House (7pm). The Bears travel to Schenectady to take on 12th-ranked Union (7pm).
