Will Mignon cross into the box found the head of
Matt Koziol as the Rensselaer men's soccer team defeated the Clarkson 1-0 in Liberty League action Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field. The loss drops the Golden Knights to 4-8-1 overall and 2-3-0 in the Liberty League with three league contests remaining in the season. Rensselaer moves to 5-3-3 overall and 1-2-2 in league games.
Following a scoreless first half in which even shots were at a premium, it appeared as if the two teams might be headed to extra time in the periodic rain. However, Rensselaer converted late in the contest to put more pressure on Clarkson's offense to get a goal late in the game. William Mignon sent a beautiful cross into the penalty area where
Matt Koziol was able to redirect the pass into the net on a solid header at the 80:55 mark in the second half. The goal was Koziol's team-best fifth of the season.
Rensselaer finished with a 10-6 lead in shots, but only one of Clarkson's chances went on goal. Clarkson goalkeeper Saverino Spagnolo (Ottawa, ONT) made four saves for the Golden Knights, while Rob DeWald needed to make just one save for RPI. The Engineers also had a 5-0 edge in corner kick chances.
