BRISTOL, R.I. – Led by a number of outstanding efforts, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's and women's swimming & diving teams kicked off their 2011-12 season in fine fashion with a dual meet sweep at Roger Williams.  The men won by a 168.5 to 125.5 margin, while the women were victorious, 161-127.
 
Leading the way for the Engineers in the season opener was junior captain Mairead Lyons (Leominster, MA/Notre Dame), who won three individual events on the afternoon.  She swam to victory in the 100-freestyle with a time of 57.10 and also claimed the 200-free with a mark of 2:04.67.  Lyons was also the victor in the 50-butterfly (28.17).
 
Also having an outstanding effort for the women was senior captain Eva Skoupka (North Andover, MA/Central Catholic), who won the 50-backstroke with a mark of 31.68 and also won the 100-back with a time of 1:06.34.
 
Skorupka, along with senior captain Carly Antonucci (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central), junior Christina Provenza (Millersville, MD/Severna Park) and rookie Aubrey Kalashian (Greenwich, CT/Convent of the Sacred Heart), also gave the Engineers their only relay win of the day as the foursome won the 400-medley relay in a time of 4:14.86.
 
Antonucci also had solid individual success for the women, winning the 50-free (26.49) and the 100-breaststroke (1:10.59).
 
On the men's side, graduate student and captain Alex Updegrove (Carson City, NV/Carson City) led the charge as he won the 50-free in a time of 22.95 and the 100-free with a mark of 50.37. 
 
Junior Nate Hosking (Keene, NH/Keene) was also outstanding for RPI as he claimed victory in the 1000-free with a time of 10:13.12 and the 500-free with a mark of 4:57.83.
 
In the diving events, the Engineers picked up victories off both boards as sophomore Miguel Hummel (Pittsburgh, PA/Fordham Prepatory) won the 3-meter with a score of 259.45, while junior Ryan MacDonald (Hamden, CT/Notre Dame) was victorious off the 1-meter board with a score of 235.13.
 
Both squads are back in action when they host Ithaca in the season home opener at Robison Pool on Saturday.  Meet time is set for 1pm as the Engineers welcome fans for Family Weekend.
