CLERMONT, Fla. - The Rensselaer softball team fell to Wisconsin-Stout this morning, 7-6, before being edged by Bethany, 3-1. With the losses, the Engineers drop to 1-3 on the season. Rookie Jen Shields (North Reading, MA/North Reading) led the way for RPI in the morning tilt, going 2 for 3 with her first career homerun.

The Engineers held a 4-2 advantage after four innings and added to their advantage in the top of the fifth as senior Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) and Shields each homered to make it a 6-2 lead. Wisconsin-Stout did not back down in the bottom of the fifth inning as freshman catcher Sam Hastings (Waukesha, WI/West) hit a grand slam to push the Blue Devils out to a 7-6 lead and the final margin.

Senior Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH/Gilford) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs (4 earned) on six hits over four plus innings of work. Bach came on in relief, surrendering just one hit, while going 1 for 4 at the plate with a homerun. Junior catcher Sara Heller (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) added a double and two runs batted in.

For Wisconsin-Stout, Junior righthander Tara Kimberly (Baldwin, WI/Baldwin-Woodville) allowed 1 run and no hits with three walks to open the game. Classmate and fellow righty Bri Conrad (South St. Paul, MN/Simley) came on in relief, allowing three runs on five hits over three innings before giving way to rookie Britt Reiter (Eau Claire, WI/North), who surrendered two runs on three hits over the final four innings.

Game two saw the Bison of Bethany jump out to a 3-0 lead behind a two-run double off the bat of sophomore Maria Vallone (Rochester, NY/Webster Schroeder). The Engineers saw their best chance to get onto the scoreboard early come in the second inning as three straight walks loaded the bases, but senior Alysa Rochminski (Schenectady, NY/Colonie) struck out looking to end the threat.

Both teams played solid defense through the middle innings as Bach settled down after the first inning to keep the Bison off the scoreboard. RPI was finally able to push a run across in the bottom of the seventh as rookie Tori Hunt (Cheshire, MA/Hoosac Valley) hit a single through the left side. An error by the shortstop saw sophomore Sheena McNeil (Urbana, IL/Urbana) get on and junior Kelly Erkert (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs.

Shields got an infield single deep into the shortstop hole to score Hunt, but it wasn't enough as the final batter for RPI lined out. Bach took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits over seven innings. Bethany saw sophomore Emily Jump (Milford, DE/Polytech) picked up the win, allowing a run on three hits over seven innings pitched.
