WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Led by a game-best four goals from senior Afton Marshall (Windham, NH/Salem), the Rensselaer women's lacrosse team defeated Connecticut College, 7-6 at the Spring Fling Florida Classic. With the win, the Engineers improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Camels slip to 0-2 on the young season.
RPI opened the game's scoring as Marshall tallied on the free position at 21:19 of the first half. Connecticut College struck back minutes later as a pair of goals less than 20 seconds apart gave the Camels a 2-1 lead with 18:07 left. The Engineers answered with another free position tally from Marshall to knot the game at 2-all less than a minute later.
The Camels were able to grab a 3-2 lead with nine minutes remaining, but RPI gained momentum going into the intermission as Marshall scored her third of the contest at 3:48 and assisted on rookie Meg Colitz's (East Greenwich, RI/LaSalle Academy) with 37 seconds left in the half to take a 4-3 lead into the locker room.
Rensselaer came out firing in the second half as Marshall and senior Jen Greenwood (Newtown, CT/Newtown) scored within the first four minutes to make it a 6-3 Engineers' lead. Connecticut's Abby Hill cut the deficit with her second of the game, but graduate student and captain Whitney Kukol (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) put RPI ahead 7-4 with 18:40 left in the game.
Connecticut made it 7-5 at the 14:21 mark and made things interesting with 21 seconds remaining as Cameron Flaherty scored, but the Camels could not get the equalizer.
In addition to Marshall, who also had an assist, the Engineers saw sophomore netminder Allie Arnal (Lakewood, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) stop 11 shots for the win.
The Camels were led by Hill, who had two goals. Katelyn Driscoll added a goal and an assist, while goalie Caitlin Cataldo stopped seven shots in the loss.
The Engineers return to action on Wednesday against the winner of Monday's late game between Brockport and Ithaca. Game time is yet to be determined.
