CLERMONT, Fla. – Senior Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) continued her outstanding offensive effort on Thursday with a pair of homeruns to lift the Rensselaer softball team to a 9-1 victory over Lawrence in five innings. The Engineers fell to #13 SUNY Cortland in the morning game. RPI is now 6-4 on the season, having won four of their last five contests.

The Engineers fought hard against the 13th-ranked Red Dragons, but were unable to solve pitcher Lyndsay Rowell, who allowed just one run on four hits over seven innings. Facing a 7-0 deficit after allowing five runs in the top of the fourth inning, junior Sara Heller (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) got RPI on the board after hitting a solo homerun to make it a six-run game.

The Engineers had their chances in the game, including a bases-loaded opportunity in the bottom of the seventh, but could not get any more runs across. Heller led the team offensively, going 3 for 3 with a double and single in addition to the homer.   Senior Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH/Gilford) shouldered the loss, surrendering seven runs on six hits over four innings. Rookie Charlene Osmanski (Elmhurst, IL/York) came on in relief, allowing no runs on four hits in the final three innings

In the victory, the Engineers saw Bach dominate at the plate and in the circle as the senior righthander allowed just one run on four hits over five innings for a complete game. RPI jumped out to a 3-0 lead to open the first inning and continued to add to its advantage in the third and fourth innings with three more runs.

Rookie Jen Shields (North Reading, MA/North Reading) sealed the game and forced the eight-run mercy rule in the top of the fifth after driving in sophomore Caitlin McGivern (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame) and junior Samantha Paulding (Baldwinsville, NY/CW Baker) to make it a 9-1 advantage.

Bach finished her day at the plate going 2 for 3 with two homeruns, three RBI and two runs scored. Senior Genevieve Falco (Seaford, NY/Seaford) was 2 for 2 with a pair of singles and a run scored, while Osmanski was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
