Felicia Bua and
Jen Bach combined to allow just five hits from the circle to lead the Rensselaer softball to wins of 8-0 and 7-0 over St. Lawrence University in the Liberty League opener for both schools. With the win, the Engineers improve to 15-5 overall and 2-0 in Liberty League play. The Saints drop to 8-10 (0-2 Liberty).
RPI earned a quick victory in the first game with a six-run fourth inning capped by junior
Sara Heller's three-run homerun over the center field wall to clear the bases and give the Engineers an 8-0 win.
Bua earned the shutout and improves to 5-3 on the season as she held the Saints to two hits in five innings while striking out five and walking two. Senior Meg Goodemote falls to 1-3 on the season.
In game two, Heller led off with a triple to center field, followed by three hits and a sacrifice fly, as the Engineers scored four runs in the second inning. They tacked on one run in the third and two in the fifth to bring the score to 6-0. Bach concluded RPI's scoring with a homerun over the left-center wall to bring the score to 7-0.
Bach allowed three hits and struck out eight batters in the shut-out. Senior Rachel Duffany was credited with the loss and falls to 2-7 on the season.
The Engineers return to action on Wednesday, when they host Williams College at Doris Robison Field (3:30pm).
