TROY, N.Y. – Seniors
Afton Marshall and
Stephanie Caouette recorded six points apiece to lead the Rensselaer women's lacrosse team to a 14-10 victory over Clarkson University, this afternoon on Senior Day at Renwyck Field. With the win the Engineers improve to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the Liberty League, while the Golden Knights drop to 1-11 and 0-8 in the conference.
A back and forth first 30 minutes saw the hosts take a three-goal advantage (7-4) into halftime, with Marshall (Windham, NH/Salem) and Caouette (Wynantskill, NY/Columbia) combining for the first five Engineers' tallies.
Clarkson junior Saryn Campbell (West Bolton, VT/Mount Mansfield) got the visitors on the board, when she netted an unassisted tally at 5:04 of the first half, cutting the RPI lead to 2-1.
After Marshall pushed the Engineers' advantage to 4-1 with back-to-back markers, Golden Knights' sophomore attack Alyssa Cristaldi (North Syracuse, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse) answered with a pair of goals of her own – the second coming with 17:18 to play in the opening stanza.
Rensselaer then scored three of the final four goals of the half, including two by Caouette.
Sophomore
Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) kicked off a three-goal scoring run by the Engineers to start the second half, as she took a feed from Caouette and beat Clarkson junior goaltender Hannah Walters (Amherst, NH/Derryfield), just under the crossbar.
Classmate
Alissa Peterson (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard) and Caouette followed with goals to extend the host's lead to 10-4, just 3:59 in the second half. Campbell netted her second goal of the contest to make it 10-5 on a free-position tally, but seniors
Jen Greenwood (Sandy Hook, CT/Newton) and Marshall answered quickly to give RPI its largest lead of the afternoon (12-5).
The Golden Knights picked up their play at the offensive end over the final seven minutes of regulation, scoring five of the game's final seven goals. Five different players found the back of the net on the run, including sophomore Katie VanDeValk (Baldwinsville, NY/CW Baker), who scored her second of the day.
RPI sophomore netminder
Allie Arnal (Lakewood, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) earned the win (8-4), making four saves, while Walters (1-11) finished with 11 stops at the other end of the field.
The Engineers return to action next weekend, when they take on William Smith and Rochester on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (2pm), respectively, to close out their Liberty League schedule.
