TROY, N.Y. – Senior Nick Tremblay broke a 2-2 tie midway through the third period and the Clarkson men's hockey team held on for a, 3-2, victory over Rensselaer, in front of 4,346 at the Houston Field House. With the win, the Golden Knights improve to 12-11-5 overall (6-5-3 ECAC Hockey), while the Engineers fall to 7-18-1 (4-9-1 ECAC Hockey).
Tremblay (Candiac, PQ/Smiths Falls Bears) carried the puck up the right wing boards before making a move in the slot. He then ripped a shot into the top left corner of the net at 13:05 of the third period. The tally, which was his 13th goal of the season, was assisted by senior Luke Oakley (Whitby, ON/St. Michael's Buzzers) and sophomore Chase Fuchs (Severna Park, MD/Syracuse Stars).
The Golden Knights opened the scoring at 2:38 of the opening stanza, when sophomore defenseman Alex Boak (Norwood, NY/Brockville Braves) threw a shot through traffic and past RPI junior netminder
Bryce Merriam (Bethel Park, PA/Topeka RoadRunners) for his first goal of the year. Assists went to senior Jake Morley (Ogdensburg, NY/Northwood) and senior Corey Tamblyn (Bobcaygeon, ON/Markham Waxers).
Clarkson made it 2-0 at 11:03 of the first, on a power-play goal by Morley. Oakley and sophomore Ben Sexton (Kanata, ON/Penticton Vees) earned the helpers.
Rensselaer sophomore
Guy Leboeuf (West Palm Beach, FL/Cornwall Colts) brought the hosts to within 2-1 at 13:28 of the first period, as his shot from the left point found its way inside the right pipe for his second of the season. Freshman
Jacob Laliberte (Rockland, ON/Cornwall Colts) earned the lone assist.
Sophomore
Matt Tinordi (Severna Park, MD/Olds Grizzlys) evened the score at 2-2, 9:38 into the second period, when a shot from the point by senior
Patrick Cullen (Washington, DC/Indiana Ice) caromed in off his skate. Sophomore
Bo Dolan (St. Paul, MN/Penticton Vees) picked up the secondary assist.
Golden Knights senior goalie Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ON/Wellington Dukes) finished with 29 saves to earn the win, while Merriam ended up with 14 at the other end of the ice.
The Engineers are back in action next weekend, when they welcome Cornell and Colgate to the Houston Field House on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
