Box Score
TROY, N.Y. - The top two teams in the Liberty League met at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's (RPI) East Campus Stadium and neither team could finish as the Engineers and St. Lawrence University played to a scoreless draw. RPI is now 7-3-3 overall and 3-1-1 in the league and remain tied in the standings with the Saints, the seventh-ranked team in the nation, who are 11-1-1 and 3-1-1.
Following a regulation in which both teams had good chances, St. Lawrence's Nate Goss-Woliner (Waitfield, VT/Kimball Union) came up biggest in the first overtime when he kicked out a low shot with his left foot on a one-on-one situation with senior
Adam Updegrove (Carson City, NV/Carson City) in the 95th minute.
Both teams had further opportunities but none greater. The Saints finished with a 20-11 edge in shots and a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. RPI goalkeeper
Rob Dewald (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) made five saves, while Goss-Woliner stopped two shots.
St. Lawrence took the opening kick and immediately generated a scoring opportunity when a left-to-right cross went off RPI crossbar. The Saints maintained possession but could not get another quality chance in that flurry.
RPI had several chances of its own through the first 45 minutes, primarily coming down the right side, but their crosses were steered away by St. Lawrence defenders or went across the field. The Saints held a 6-3 advantage in first half shots, but the Engineers had the only two corner kicks of the first half.
The action in the second half was back-and-forth with St. Lawrence earning its first corner kick early on and RPI generating a chance off a free kick. The Engineers actually had two shots in the sequence, which came in the 57th minute, but
Ryan Gracy's (West Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) header was wide and
Matt Koziol's (Poughkeepsie, NY/F.D. Roosevelt) attempt was high.
SLU's Brian Gilloran (Guilford, CT/Guilford) answered with a shot on goal three minutes later but Dewald made the save. Three minutes later, Dewald followed with a finger-tip stop on a shot by Ozzy Morales (New Province, NJ/New Hampton) that ended up going off the left post and out of bounds.
The best chance for either team to that point came in the 69th minute when St. Lawrence's Will Congden (Brooklyn, NY/Beacon School) had his long distance shot punched out by a scrambling Dewald. The ball went to Saints senior captain Sam DeMello (Easthampton, MA/Williston-Northampton) but his attempt from roughly 15 yards away went wide of the right post.
Rensselaer is right back in action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts Clarkson University in a league game at 2pm at East Campus Stadium. The Saints play at Liberty League foe Union College at 2pm on Saturday.
