CLERMONT, Fla. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) scored a combined 23 runs on 26 hits to sweep a doubleheader with St. Joseph's College by scores of 9-2 and 14-1, this afternoon in non-league action. With the wins, the Engineers improve to 5-3 overall, while the Blue Jays drop to 1-5.
After taking an early 1-0 in game, the Engineers gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of fifth. St. Joseph's sophomore Ashley Gall (Stafford Springs, CT/East Catholic) delivered the big blow in the frame, driving in both runs with a double to right-center.
It didn't take long for Rensselaer to answer as the visitors put up seven runs in to the top of the sixth. Sophomore
Tori Hunt (Cheshire, MA/Hoosac Valley) reached on an infield single with one out in the inning. She then stole second and came around to score on a double by junior
Aimee Konet (Houston, TX/Friendswood). Two more doubles from
Dani Grage (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) and
Caitlin McGivern (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame) gave the Engineers a 3-2 lead.
A
Kelly Erkert single and an errant throw, put two runners in scoring position for freshman
Jocilyn Rudisill (Galloway, NJ/Absegami), who came through with a two-run single.
Sara Heller (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) then launched RPI's first home run of the season to cap the scoring in the stanza.
RPI added a final run in the top of the seventh, when Konet tripled with one out and scored on an error.
Game two saw the Engineers jump out to a 9-1 lead after two innings. After the two clubs traded runs in the first, RPI put together a two-out rally in the second. After the first two batters were retired on grounders, 12 straight reached base successfully.
Jen Shields (North Reading, MA/North Reading) got the rally started with a double. She was followed by a run-scoring single by Grage. A walk and a base-hit loaded the bases for Rudisill, who picked up an RBI with a base on balls of her own. After taking advantage of back-to-back passed balls to score two more runs. Hunt drilled a double to left to plate two more. A walk to
Gillian McCarthy followed by two wild pitches turned into two more runs for RPI.
Rensselaer tacked on one run in the fourth and four more in the fifth before the game was called. Hunt finshed game two 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI.
The Engineers are back on the diamond tomorrow, when they take on Keene State (3pm) and SUNY Geneseo (7pm).
