Engineers fall in opening round of Liberty League Tournament

The fourth-seeded William Smith tennis team edged No. 5 Rensselaer 5-3 in a first round match in the 2012 Liberty League Women's Tennis Championship played in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.  The Herons advance to the semifinals where they will face top-seeded Skidmore tomorrow, May 5 (10am).

The Herons are now 15-3 this season and have won their last 10 matches in a row. The mark is the longest winning streak in a single season in program history. The Herons have won 10 straight matches one other time spanning the course of two seasons. The William Smith tennis team won the final two matches of the 2000-01 season and then won the first eight straight to start the 2001-02.

The Engineers wrapped up 2011-12 with a 12-5 record. The Thoroughbreds topped No. 8 seed Bard 5-0 in their first round match to earn a spot in the semifinals.

The Herons came out of doubles play up 2-1. Seniors Katie Serock and Jess McCue topped their competition 8-4 at No. 2. The pair is now 15-5 this season. Juniors Hallsey Leighton and Remy Raevsky edged their opponents 9-8 (7-2) at No. 3 to improve to 10-4 this year.

Senior Casey Kennedy dropped her first set 6-1, but rallied to defeat Casey Olson 6-4, 6-2 in the next two for the win at No. 1 singles. Senior Joanie Hilton also came away with a three-set victory over RPI's Meghan Olson 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 3.  Hilton leads the Herons with 20 singles victories this season. Sophomore Casey Nicoletti triumphed over Brianna Dickie 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5. First-year Haley Wolf was up 2-1 at No. 6 when the match reached decision.
