TROY, NY -- Taylor Mahoney (Cary, Ill./Chicago Mission) scored the equalizing goal at 12:15 of the third period to set the score at 2-2, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) tied #7 Boston University in non-conference women's hockey action at Houston Field House on Friday evening. With the tie, RPI moves to 1-1-1 on the young season, while the Terriers are now 0-0-1 after their first game of 2013-14.

Boston U. got the scoring started early, as Jordan Juron (Latham, N.Y. / Middlesex School) took a pass from Rebecca Russo (Shelton, Conn./Shattuck St. Mary's) just 2:42 into play. RPI would respond before the end of the period, however, as Alexa Gruschow (Mechanicburg, Pa./Washington Pride) scored her first goal of the season. The sophomore carried the puck on a breakaway down the right side of the ice, and took a hard shot about six feet outside the crease, finding the back of the net to tie the game at 1-all.

The Terriers made quick work of regaining the lead in the second period, as Russo scored her first goal of the season, getting helpers from Juron and Kaleigh Fratkin (Burnaby, B.C./North West Giants) just 34 seconds after the opening faceoff. The Terriers would hold onto the one-goal advantage for the remainder of the period, as it was the only stanza in which Boston U. would outshoot the Engineers.

Rensselaer regained its composure in the third period, and with 12:15 left to play, Heidi Huhtamaki (Espoo, Finland/Espoo Blues) passed the puck to Madison Marzario (Prior Lake, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's), who sent it towards the goal, where Mahoney redirected it past Boston U. goalkeeper Kerrin Sperry (North Reading, Mass./Lawrence Academy). The Engineers continued to fire on Sperry until the final horn, including getting two point-blank shots from Lauren Wash (Walpole, Mass. / Phillips Andover) late, but were unable to score, sending the game to overtime.

RPI controlled the majority of the extra five minutes, outshooting the Terriers, 6-3. However, neither team could find the back of the net, and each team earned its first tie of the season.

The Engineers outshot Boston U., 36-28, in the game. RPI goalkeeper Kelly O'Brien (Sussex, Wis./Madison Capitals) made 26 saves between the pipes for the Engineers, including 12 stops in the first period. Sperry recorded 34 saves for Boston U., hitting double-digit save totals in the first (12) and third (13) periods.

RPI will return to action on Saturday, hosting Northeastern at 4 p.m.
