TROY, N.Y. – Junior goalkeeper
Rob Dewald made four saves, as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team tied Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), 0-0, this afternoon in Liberty League action from Renwyck Field. With the draw, the Engineers move to 9-4-1 overall (5-1-1 Liberty), while the Tigers are now 5-6-3 (2-3-1 Liberty).
Dewald (Arlington, VA/Washington-Lee) was tested very early in the match, when RIT senior Sean Sullivan (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) broke in on goal all alone. Dewald flew off his line to make a sliding save in the third minute of play.
Four minutes later, the Engineers had their first chance to take a lead, but a cross from sophomore
Nathaniel Gunderson (Olympia, WA/Tumwater) rolled through box to junior
Pat Noonan (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt), whose shot sailed over the top of the net.
In the 29th minute, senior
Ryan Gracy (West Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) ripped a right-footed try from the 12 yards out that wound up inches from the left post. Despite the advantage in chances in the first half, RPI trailed RIT, 8-6 in shots after 45 minutes, including 2-0 in shots on goal.
The second stanza provided more chances each way, including a partial breakaway opportunity for Gunderson in the 52nd minute. His low shot was turned away by RIT sophomore keeper Mark Reeves (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon). Six minutes later, junior
Tim Terrezza (New Providence, NJ/New Providence) skipped a shot just wide left of goal.
Noonan nearly put the Engineers ahead in the 87th minute, but his attempt from 10 yards spun off the outside of his right foot and went well wide of the mark. Rensselaer held a 14-9 shots advantage after 90 minutes of play.
The Tigers had the first quality scoring chance in the extra session, when senior captain John Kaddo (Troy, NY/Averill Park) saw his shot from 25 yards curl just over the crossbar in the 97th minute. Gunderson then got a clean look at goal in the 110th minute, but Reeves was able to hold onto the strike, despite being off balance.
Dewald (9-3-1) earned his sixth shutout of the season and 18th of his career, which ties Brian Dauskurdas '98 for second most in school history. Reeves finished with three saves for his fifth shutout of the season.
The Engineers are back in action on Wednesday, when they host Williams College for a non-league contest at East Campus Stadium (7:30pm).
