Emily Aaldenberg won at fourth singles in three sets to clinch a dual match victory for the women's tennis team, 5-4 over SUNY Geneseo in a competition that lasted five hours at Sharp Courts. The Engineers, who are ranked 20th in the latest regional rankings, improve to 3-0, while the Knights, the 14th ranked team in the region, fall for the first time and are now 7-1.
Aaldenberg dropped a close first set, 6-7 (2), to freshman Maggie Hale, before rallying for victories in the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2. She was one of two RPI singles players to post victories, joining sophomore
Kelsey Ham, who won at No. 6, 6-1, 6-0, over freshman Veronica Skolnick.
Three other singles matches also went to three sets with Geneseo prevailing in each. Among them, junior Amanda Rosati defeated sophomore
Emily Laurilliard, 4-6, 6-0, 7-5, at No. 2 and freshman Karli Hollins bested senior
Christina Ciamarra, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Rensselaer got off to a 3-0 start on the day by sweeping the doubles. The closest of the three was at No. 1, which saw
Casey Olsen and Laurilliard defeat Rosati and Marylen Santos, 9-8 (5).
Both teams are back on the court in the Capital District on Sunday. The Engineers host Union at noon, while the Knights travel to Siena for an 11am match.
