CLERMONT, Fla. – The Rensselaer softball teams suffered a pair of 12-4 losses on its second day on its Florida Spring Training Trip. Ripon opened its 2013 season by defeating RPI, 12-4 in five innings and the Engineers suffered another 12-4 defeat losing to The College of New Jersey. Rensselaer is now 1-3.
In the first game, Ripon pounded out 12 runs on 15 hits, including three doubles. It scored a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single before RPI tied the game in the second on an RBI single by
Aimee Konet. Rensselar took the lead later in the inning on a double steal with two outs. Both runs were unearned due to an error to lead off the frame.
That lead only lasted one inning however, as Ripon scored five runs in the third to take a 6-2 advantage. RPI tacked on two more runs in the fourth - a sac fly by Konet and a run-scoring single by
Gillian McCarthy - to cut the lead to two. However, Ripon extended it's lead back to three on an RBI single and the Red Hawks scored another five runs in the fifth inning to end the game.
Konet was 1 for 1 with two RBI, while five others had one hit apiece.
Charlene Osmanski suffered the loss.
Game two saw TCNJ junior pitcher Alex Carisone benefit from a potent offense that collected 12 runs on 12 hits to earn the team's first win of the season. TCNJ used a five-run third inning to break a 2-2 tied and tacked on two more in the fourth and three in the sixth to close out the game.
Taylor Ten Eyck was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, while
Kristina Weltzin took the defeat from the circle.
