CLERMONT, Fla. - Senior captain
Gillian McCarthy went a combined 5 for 7 with a home run to lead the Rensselaer softball team to a split of its day 1 games on its Spring Trip. The Engineers (1-1) lost their opener to John Carroll University, 10-6, before defeating Heidelberg College, 7-2, in the night cap.
John Carroll jumped out to a 10-0 lead after 2.5 innings and RPI was not able to make its way back into the game. McCarthy highlighted the Engineers offensively in game one, going 3 for 4 with a home run, a run scored two runs batted in. Freshman lefthander
Victoria Hepworth was strong in 4.1 innings of relief work, allowing just a single run on six hits.
In game two, Rensselaer fell behind by a single run in the fourth (1-0), before mounting a late-inning comeback.
Tori Hunt came through with a run-scoring triple in the sixth, which was backed up by an RBI-single from McCarthy.
Aimee Konet and Hunt each delivered two-run base-hits in the seventh to give the Engineers a five-run cushion (7-2).
Junior
Charlene Osmanski (1-0) threw a 7.0-inning complete game, allowing two runs on nine hits. She struck out two and did not surrender a walk.
The Engineers are in action this morning against Ripon College (9am) and The College of New Jersey (11am).
