CLERMONT, Fla. – Eleven players recorded hits as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Intitute (RPI) softball team defeated Suffolk University, 15-1, yesterday. The Engineers, which also shut out Simmons College, 4-0, improve to 6-4 on the season.
RPI scored in all five innings in upending Suffolk. Senior Amiee Konet (Houston, TX/Friendswood) highlighted game, going 2 for 4 with a run scored and three runs batted in, while sophomore
Jena Servidone (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI. Freshman
Danielle Balestrini (Lake Placid, NY/Lake Placid) chipped in with her first collegiate hit, going 1 for 2 with a two-run double.
From the circle, sophomore
Kristina Weltzin (Commerce Town, MI/Walled Lake Northern) pitched the first 2.0 innings, allowing one hit, while striking out three. Freshman
Victoria Hepworth (Cheshire, MA/Holyoke) threw the final 3.0 innings, giving up a run on four hits with two strikeouts.
In game two, Weltzin threw a 7.0-inning complete game shutout over Simmons. Allowing just one extra-base hit (a double), Weltzin struck out five, while walking two.
Offensively, senior
Gillian McCarthy (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) got things started early, driving home Konet with a 1st-inning single. Konet then drove in a run with sacrifice fly in the 5th to make it 2-0.
An RBI-groundout off the bat of senior
Caitlin McGivern (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame) scored the Engineers' third run in the 6th. Freshman
Taylor Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) capped the scoring with a run-scoring base hit.
The Engineers conclude their trip today with a doubleheader against Oswego State in Mineola, Florida (9am).
