MINNEOLA, Fla. – Sophomore
Kristina Weltzin notched 11 strikeouts in 7.0 innings of a, 3-1, game one victory, before the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team topped Oswego State, 8-4, in the nightcap for the doubleheader sweep, this morning. With the wins, the Engineers improve to 8-4 overall, while the Lakers drop to 0-2.
Weltzin (Commerce Town, MI/Walled Lake Northern) surrendered just one run on five hits to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Rensselaer got the righthander early run support, scoring on a
Gillian McCarthy (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) single in the first inning. Oswego had an immediate answer, however, as junior captain Dee Apps (Camillus, NY/West Genesee) hit her first home run of the season in the top of the second, tying the game at 1-1.
The Engineers regained the lead for good in the bottom of the third, when senior
Caitlin McGivern (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame) singled-home McCarthy. RPI was able to tack on an insurance run in the inning, as freshman
Taylor Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) delivered an RPI base-hit.
In game two, Rensselaer jumped out to a 7-0 lead through the first four innings. Junior
Dani Grage (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) had a pair of run-scoring hits in the outburst, including a single that plated classmate
Tori Hunt (Cheshire, MA/Hoosac Valley) for the game's first run.
The Lakers scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to draw within 7-3. The scoring was highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of freshman Tori Trovato (Fulton, NY/Millbrook).
Ten Eyck extended the RPI advantage to 8-3 with an RBI-single in the top of the sixth, before Oswego scored the game's final run in the bottom of the frame.
Junior
Charlene Osmanski (Elmhurst, IL/York) earned the victory from the circle to improve to 3-2 on the year. She allowed two runs on seven hits over 4.0 innings, striking out one with one walk.
The Engineers are back in action on March 23, when they host Ithaca College in their home-opening doubleheader at Doris Robison Field (1pm).
