CASTLETON, Vt. - Eight players recorded multiple goals as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team defeated Castleton State College, 22-8, this afternoon in non-league action. With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Spartans drop to 0-5.
The Engineers' 22 goals set a single-game school record, previously held by the 2001 squad, which scored 21 against Bridgwater State. It was also the fifth time Rensselaer has ever scored 20 or more goals in a game, including once earlier this season.
Meg Colitz (East Greenwich, RI/LaSalle Academy),
Mackenzie O'Neil (Duxbury, MA/Milton Academy), and
Alissa Peterson (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard) paced RPI with three goals apiece.
Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randoph) chipped in with two goals and three assists for a game-high five points.
For Castleton, Amanda Flodstrom notched three goals, pushing her season total to a team-high eight. Sarah Clark, Mariah Lesure, Cori Healy, Blake Wardwell, and Bri MacKay each notched one goal in the loss.
RPI jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes before Castleton got on the scoreboard with a goal from Flodstrom 8:19 into the game. The Engineers notched two more before Blake Wardwell snagged a pass from Sarah Clark and netted it for the goal, cutting the Spartans deficit to 4-2.
Peterson scored back-to-back goals for the Engineers putting the squad up 6-2. Sarah Clark responded with a tally for the Spartans to cut the lead to three goals. The Engineers ended the half on a 4-1 run to make the score at the break 10-4.
In the second half, Castleton traded goals with the Engineers through the first four minutes with each team notching two. A goal by Maguire with 25:16 remaining triggered a 9-1 run for RPI over the next 18 minutes, putting the Spartans in a 21-7 hole. Each team would score in the final six minutes to make the final 22-8.
Meghan Els took the loss for the Spartans in goal, splitting time with Lily Derbyshire. The pair combined for nine saves.
Allie Arnal (Lakewood, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) got the win for the Engineers, making seven saves before being relieved

Rensselaer is idle this weekend, but returns to action on March 29 and 30, when it visits St. Lawrence (4pm) and Clarkson (2pm), respectively.
