Shannon Maguire scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team to a 13-9 victory over Oneonta State University, this afternoon at Renwyck Field. With the win, the Engineers open the 2013 season at 1-0, while the Red Dragons drop to 1-1.
After Oneonta St. senior captain Caroline Tulley (Malverne, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) opened the scoring 1:32 in the contest, the Engineers ran off six straight goals, including three by Maguire (Randoph, NJ/Randolph) to take a 6-1 lead, midway through the first half.
Red Dragons' freshman Nicole Boylan (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) halted the RPI run by netting her second of the season at 16:39 of the stanza. Tulley then netted her second of the game to bring the visitors to within 6-3. Sophomore Nicole Fioretti (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) earned the assist on Tulley's tally.
The two teams then traded goals a pair of goals leading up the halftime, including Maguire's fourth of the game. Oneonta St. freshman Allison McClain (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) scored with just under 10 seconds to play in the opening frame to make it 8-5.
Rensselaer freshman
Erin Riley (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South) netted her second of the game at 2:57 of the second half on a feed from junior
Rachel Scofield (Albany, NY/South Colonie) to extend host's lead to 9-5.
Oneonta St. sophomore Kiera McNally (East Northport, NY/Northport) once again drew the visitors to within three goals, with her seventh of the year at 5:35 of the half. The Engineers had the answer, however, scoring three straight times to take a 12-6 lead with 14:28 to play.
The Red Dragons then tallied three consecutive goals of their own, including Tulley's fourth of the game and ninth of the season, to make it 12-9 with 4:37 remaining, but RPI was able to run down the clock and add insurance goal at 27:12, when senior
Alissa Peterson (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard) slotted home her second of the contest.
Engineers' senior netminder
Allie Arnal (Lakewood, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) was superb on the day finishing with 12 saves to earn the win. Oneonta St. junior Laura Gross (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown) made five stops at the other end of the field.
Rensselaer, which has now won 22 of its last 23 regular season contests, is back in action on Monday, when it takes on Keene State in West Palm Beach, Florida (7pm). The Red Dragons host Marywood on Saturday (12pm).
