Softball Sweeps Skidmore to Improve to 14-6

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TROY, N.Y. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team's pitchers held Skidmore College to one run on 10 hits as the Engineers swept a Liberty League doubleheader with the Thoroughbreds, 10-0 and 5-1, at Doris Robison Field. RPI, which recognized its seniors prior to the first game, improves to 14-6 overall and 3-1 in the league. Skidmore falls to 8-18 and 0-4.

Sophomore Kristina Weltzin (Commerce Town, MI / Walled Lake Northern) earned the victory in the first game, allowing no runs on two hits with three strikeouts and no walks in 4.0 innings. She also went 1 for 3 with a triple and a run scored as the Engineers posted the five inning win. RPI scored a run in the first inning, three more in the second and six in the fifth.

Senior Aimee Konet (Houston, TX / Friendswood) was the offensive catalyst, going 3 for 3 with a run and two RBI. Classmate Gillian McCarthy (Worthington, OH / Thomas Worthington) added a two-run home run.

Skidmore got singles from five different players, three of which came in the fifth inning. Senior Julia Schwartz (Bryn Mawr, PA / The Shipley School), who pitched a complete game, took the loss from the circle.

The second game saw the Engineers jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and Charlene Osmanski (Elmhurst, IL / York) made it stand by pitching a complete game five-hitter.

Konet put Rensselaer ahead early with a two-run double and then she came around to score on a single by McCarthy. Skidmore pulled to within 3-1 on a double to right centerfield by Schwartz in the fourth inning, but Osmanski doubled in a run in the fifth to regain the three-run margin. Konet's second hit of the nightcap, a single to center, plated the final run.

Osmanski improved her record to 4-2 by striking out five while walking just one. Katie Sorochka (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial), a junior, took the loss. She allowed five earned runs on seven hits in six innings. She walked four and struck out three in falling to 7-10. Cassie Fishkin (New City, NY / Clarkstown South), a freshman, also had a double for the visitors.

RPI is scheduled to host Oneonta State in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 3pm. The Thoroughbreds travel to Middlebury on Wednesday for a doubleheader (3:30pm).
