ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Rensselaer softball's fourth and fifth place hitters combined for six hits, four runs and four RBI as the Engineers outslugged the University of Rochester, 9-7 in a Liberty League Tournament winners' bracket game. Senior
Gillian McCarthy went 3 for 3 with three runs and an RBI and junior
Charlene Osmanski was 3 for 4 with 1 run and three runs batted in to pace RPI.
RPI improves to 25-14 overall and will play for the Liberty League championship on Sunday at 10 am. Rochester's loss halts an eight-game Yellowjacket winning streak (21-18 overall). U of R faces St. Lawrence at 3:30 pm on Saturday to determine which squad faces RPI. If the Rochester-St. Lawrence survivor wins the 10 am game Sunday, the same two teams will play at 12:30 pm to determine the league champion.
On Saturday, Rensselaer collected 12 hits and got a complete game pitching effort from
Kristina Weltzin for the second straight day. Weltzin allowed seven hits and seven runs (two earned). She struck out seven.
Osmanski doubled home two runs in the firfst and
Tori Hunt singled in a run in the second as RPI took a 3-0 lead. Rochester scored five runs in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of three RPI errors. Gena Bradford Tume doubled hoem one run. Two more came home when Rachel Roddenbery's sac bunt was thrown away. Another throwing error scored Roddeenbery to put Rochester up, 4-3, and Sarah Wayson singled in the final run.
RPI got even immediately. Osmanski doubled to left center to score one run and the tying run scored when
Caitlin McGivern's comebacker couldn't be handled in time to get an out. RPI snapped the 5-5 tie with four runs in the fifth, three of those unearned. McCarthy's single scored AImee Konet. After Osmanski singled, McGivern singled through the mound scoring McCarthy. Weltzin's single made it 8-5 and a wild pitch scored the final run.
Rochester picked up single runs in the sixth and seventh. In the sixth, Nina Korn hit an RBI double with two down. Gena Bradford Tume homered to right center with one out in the seventh. It is her 13th this year (fourth this week and second in two days). She has an ongoing single-season Rochester record.
