PRINCETON, NJ -- Mike Ambrosia (Chatham, NJ / Delbarton) scored the go-ahead goal just over a minute into the third period to lead Princeton to a 2-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in men's ECAC Hockey action on Friday evening at Hobey Baker Rink. With the loss, RPI falls to 8-9-4 overall, with a 3-4-3 mark in conference play, while Princeton improves to 4-14-0, with a 3-8-0 mark in the ECAC.
Rensselaer scored first, getting a tally from
Luke Curadi (Cheshire, CT / Dubuque Fighting Saints) at 14:49 of the first period.
Jimmy DeVito (Bloomingdale, IL / Lincoln Stars) and
Brock Higgs (Kingston, ON / Kingston Voyageurs)Â picked up assists on Curadi's second goal of the season. Princeton would respond before the end of the stanza, taking advantage of a power play opportunity. Tyler Maugeri (Malibu, CA / Malibu) tied the game at 1-1 with the extra-man goal, taking helpers from Jonathan Liau (Burbank, CA / Burbank) and Tom Kroshus (Calgary, AB / Edge School).
Neither team would change the score in the second period, despite two power play opportunities for the Engineers. RPI outshot the Tigers, 12-5, in the period, but were unable to find the back of the net.Â
Just 1:04 into the third, Ambrosia took assists from Ryan Siiro (Bloomington, MN / Bloomington Jefferson) and Aaron Kesselman (Mays Landing, NJ / Bishop Brady) to score the go-ahead tally. The Engineers would continue to battle for the remainder of the stanza, including getting a power play with less than a minute to go in the game, but the Tigers would hold on for the win.Â
Scott Diebold (Buffalo, NY / Tri-City Storm)Â played just over 58 minutes between the pipes for Rensselaer, making 25 saves. Princeton goaltender Colton Phinney (Chatham, NJ / Delbarton) finished with 33 saves in a complete-game effort. The Engineers outshot Princeton, 34-27, but were unable to convert on four power play opportunities, while the Tigers were 1-for-1 with the man advantage.Â
