DENVER, Colo. – Three first period power play goals led the 16th-ranked Denver University men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this evening at Magness Arena. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 2-0, while the Engineers drop to 1-3.
Sophomore Trevor Moore (Thousand Oaks, CA) opened the scoring for the hosts at 8:03 of the first period, taking a feed from classmate Will Butcher (Sun Prairie, WI) and beating RPI junior netminder
Jason Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB/Des Moines Bucs) from close range. Senior Daniel Doremus (Aspen, CO) earned the second helper.
The Pioneers made it 2-0 at 10:35 of the first. Once again on the man advantage, sophomore Matt Marcinew (Calgary, AB) stuck home his own rebound for his first of the year. Assists went to juniors Gabe Levin (Denver, CO) and Nolan Zajac (Winnipeg, MB).
Denver junior Quentin Shore (Denver, CO) pushed the lead to 3-0 at 15:42 of the frame, when he beat Kasdorf for his second of the season. Freshman Danton Heinen (Langley, BC) and senior Joey LaLeggia (Burnaby, BC) picked up the assists on the power play tally.
Senior Zac Larraza (Scottsdale, AZ) picked out the top left corner of the net at 3:05 of the second to give the hosts a 4-0 advantage. The goal chased Kasdorf from the game, finishing with 19 saves on 23 shots.
Rensselaer found the scoresheet at 19:25 of the third, when a point shot by junior
Chris Bradley (Williamsville, NY/Youngstown Phantoms) found its way over the left shoulder of Denver sophomore goaltender Evan Cowley (Evergreen, CO) for his first of the year. Senior
Zach Schroeder (Prior Lake, MN/St. Thomas Academy) and freshman
Lou Nanne (Edina, MN/Sioux Falls Stampede) were credited with the assists.
Cowley (2-0) finished with 14 saves, while RPI senior
Scott Diebold (Buffalo, NY/Tri-City Storm) stopped all 16 shots he faced in relief.
The Engineers return to the ice next weekend, when they host Bentley University for a two-game series at the Houston Field House. Puck drop is scheduled for 7pm on both Friday and Saturday nights. Denver visits Minnesota-Duluth for two games next weekend.
