Men's Hockey Falls to Bentley, 5-2, in Home Opener

TROY, N.Y. -- Kyle Schmidt scored the first and last goals of the game to lead Bentley to a 5-2 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the Engineers' home opener on Friday evening at Houston Field House. WIth the loss, RPI drops to 1-3-0 overall, while Bentley evens out their record at 2-2-0.

After a scoreless first period, Schmidt (Menomonee Falls, WI / Sioux City Musketeers) got the scoring started in the second period for the Falcons, taking assists from Billy Eiserman (Newburyport, MA / Chicago Steel) and Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta / Westside Warriors) at 7:35. The Engineers tied the game at 18:03 as Lou Nanne (Edina, MN / Sioux Falls Stampede) scored his first collegiate goal. Drew Melanson (Paramus, NJ / Waterloo Black Hawks) carried the puck down the ice and passed back to Nanne, who shot from the left wing over goaltender Gabe Antoni's (Lansdale, PA / Springfield Jr. Blues) right shoulder.

Bentley took a two goal lead in just over a four-minute span in the third period. At 9:09 Grieve deked past an RPI defender, making a move to his backhand, beating RPI netminder Jason Kasdorf (Winnipeg, Manitoba / Des Moines Bucs). Grieve got assists from Andrew McDonald (New Brighton, MN / Fargo Force) picked up the assist on the tally. Will Suter (Omaha, NE / Lincoln Stars) put the Falcons up, 3-1, at 13:26, as he tipped in an initial shot from Matt Maher (Avon, CT / Westside Warriors), with Derek Bacon (Calgary, Alberta / Okotoks Oilers) picking up the second assist. 

On the ensuing possession, just 13 seconds later, Nanne scored his second goal of the game. Miller passed the puck across the slot to Nanne, who beat Antoni short side for the score. In the final minute of play, the Engineers pulled the goaltender, trying to take advantage of the extra offensive player on the ice. Despite getting off several shots, RPI was unable to capitalize, while Bentley scored two empty-netters. Max French (West Kelowna, BC / West Kelowna Warriors) took an assist from Matt Blomquist (Blaine, MN / Coulee Region Chill) at 19:16, while Schmidt rounded out the scoring at 19:44 with an unassisted tally. 

Bentley just outshot Rensselaer, 21-20, and held a 31-19 advantage in faceoffs. Kasdorf finished with 16 saves for the Engineers, while Antoni stopped 18 opposing shots for the Falcons. 

RPI and Bentley will return to action on Saturday night in continued non-conference action, facing off at 7 p.m.
