Curtis Leonard scored twice, while the Engineers also got two goals from freshmen, to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a 5-2 win over University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) in a men's hockey exhibition game on Saturday evening at Houston Field House.
UPEI got on the board first, as Tyler Brown took an assist from Darcy Ashley at 12:38. RPI would score twice in quick succession to end the period, taking a lead they would not relinquish. Freshman
Lou Nanne (Edina, MN / Sioux Falls) scored for the first time at the collegiate level at 18:38, taking assists from
Zach Schroeder (Prior Lake, MN / Saint Thomas Academy) and
Mark McGowan (Toronto, ON / Oakville), to tie the game at 1-1. Less than a minute later, sophomore
Riley Bourbonnais (Rochester, NY / Lincoln) took a pass from
Luke Curadi (Cheshire, CT / Dubuque) and carried the puck up the ice, where he found senior
Matt Neal (Minesing, ON / Stoufville), who put the puck away behind UPEI starting goaltender Connor Wilkinson.
Freshman
Viktor Liljegren (Stockholm, Sweden / Fairbanks) put the Engineers ahead, 3-1, 4:32 into the second period with his first collegiate goal on a power play. Bourbonnais started the play, passing off to
Jimmy DeVito (Bloomingdale, IL / Lincoln), who found Liljegren in the mid-slot, where he took a hard shot straight into the back of the net. Leonard (Napanee, ON / Wellington) scored his first goal with just over a minute left to play in the period, getting helpers from freshmen classmates
Drew Melanson (Paramus, NJ / Waterloo) and
Bradley Bell (Sudbury, ON / Sudbury).
Just over eight minutes into the third, Leonard scored his second of the day, with Bourbonnais picking up his third assist of the day, and freshman
Mike Prapavessis (Oakville, ON / Toronto) getting the second helper on the power play goal. UPEI closed out the scoring with an extra-man tally of their own at 13:05, as Reggie Traccitto took an assist from Tyler Brown.
RPI outshot the Panthers, 31-24, while UPEI held a 41-31 advantage in faceoff wins.
Jason Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB / Des Moines) started between the pipes for the Engineers, returning to the ice after missing all but two games last season with an injury. Kasdorf played 29:31 for RPI, making eight saves. Senior
Scott Diebold (Buffalo, NY / Tri-City) played the final 30:29 in the net, recording 14 saves for the Engineers. Wilkinson took the loss for UPEI, recording 20 saves in just over 46 minutes of action. Mavric Parks played the additional 13:57 for the Panthers, making six saves.
Rensselaer will kick off the regular season on Friday when the team travels to #12 Notre Dame to particpate in the IceBreaker Tournament in South Bend, Ind. The Engineers will then take on either #1 Minnesota or Minnesota-Duluth on Sunday.
