Diebold Shuts The Door On UNH

Engineers hold off the Wildcats, 2-1

Scott Diebold
Box Score DURHAM, N.H. - Senior goaltender Scott Diebold stopped all 22 shots he faced over the final 40 minutes to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the University of New Hampshire, this evening in non-league play from Whittemore Center. With the win, the Engineers improve to 6-7-1 overall, while the Wildcats drop to 4-8.

Diebold (Buffalo, NY/Tri-City Storm) came on in relief of junior Jason Kasdorf (Winnipeg, MB/Des Moines Buccaneers) to start the second stanza. He went on to record 11 saves in each of the final two periods, after Kasdorf stopped 12 of 13 in the first.

New Hampshire opened the scoring at 8:09 of the first, when freshman Warren Foegele (Unionville, ON/St. Andrew's) netted his first collegiate tally on a rebound in front of the RPI goal. After shots by junior Collin MacDonald (West Milford, NJ/Jersey) and freshman John Furgele (Glen Mills, PA/New Jersey) were turned away by Kasdorf, Foegele was able to sneak home a power-play tally.

The Engineers drew even (1-1) at 14:37 of the first, on a blast by senior captain Curtis Leonard (Napanee, ON/Wellington Dukes). Classmate Matt Neal found Leonard all alone at the top of the left circle with a cross-ice feed, before the blueliner ripped a shot into the top left corner of the net for his first of the year.

Sophomore Parker Reno (Edina, MN/Edina HS) put Rensselaer on top for good at 16:21 of the first, finishing point-blank on a feed across the crease from junior Travis Fulton (Oakville, ON/Vaughan Vipers). Sophomore Jimmy DeVito (Bloomington, IN/Lincoln Stars) picked up the second assist.

Diebold made a handful of tremendous saves throughout the second and third periods to preserve the victory for the Engineers. He made a sprawling pad save, going post-to-post in the second, before making back-to-back stops in the final minute, when RPI was on the penalty kill and the Wildcats had pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker.

Rensselaer finished 0 for 3 on the power-play, while New Hampshire was 1 for 7. Wildcats freshman netminder Adam Clark (Sherwood Park, AB/Salmon Arm) made a number of fantastic saves in his own right, denying multiple RPI breakaway chances that could have put the game out of reach. He finished with 29 saves on the night.

The Engineers are back in action this weekend, when they travel the University of Michigan for a two-game series. Puck drop for both Friday and Saturday night is scheduled for 7:35pm.
