Tori Hunt went a combined 5 for 8 to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a doubleheader split with Plattsburgh State, this afternoon at Doris Robison Field. After winning, 4-2, and losing, 2-1, the Engineers move to 13-9 overall, while the Cardinals are now 6-16.
In game one, Rensselaer came back from a 2-0 deficit in the sixth inning to win. Junior
Jena Servidone (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) came through with the game-tying, two-run double in the top of the inning, before sophomore
Taylor Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) brought home the eventual winning run with a single up the middle.
Hunt (Chesire, MA/Hoosac Valley) added an insurance run in the seventh, singling to right, which brought home freshman
Morgan Kollmeier (Kennett Square, PA/Kennett).
Plattsburgh scored the game's first two runs in the first two innings, on RBI-singles from senior Brianna Clarke (Manorville, NY/Eastport South Manor) and freshman Nicole Chiarello (New Woodstock, NY/Cazenovia).
RPI freshman righthander
Stephanie Caudle (Gainsville, FL/Gainsville) earned her first collegiate victory from the circle in her first complete game, allowing two runs (1 earned) on seven hits in 7.0 innings. She struck out four and walked five. Cardinals righty Morgan Anderson (Johnsonville, NY/Hoosic Valley) was tagged with the loss, giving up four runs in 7.0 innings. She had one strikeout and no walks.
Game two saw Plattsburgh jump out to another early lead, plating a single run in the bottom of the first inning. Clarke rolled a hit through the left side of the infield, which brought home junior Brittany Marshall (Malone, NY/Franklin Academy).
The Cardinals made it 2-0 in the fourth, when senior Samantha Capobianco (Huntington, NY/Elwood-John Glenn) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Rensselaer then loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth, before Servidone was plunked in the arm to bring home a run. Plattsburgh starter Kristen Fisher (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh) was able to avoid further trouble by inducing a flyout off the bat of
Taylor Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) to end the inning.
Anderson came on the pitch the final 2.0 innings for the Cardinals, picking up her first save of the season. RPI sophomore starter
Victoria Hepworth (Cheshire, MA/Holyoke) was hit with the loss, allowing two runs (1 earned) on five hits in 5.0 innings.
The Engineers are back in action Friday, when the host Liberty League-foe Rochester for a doubleheader (3pm). Plattsburgh hosts New Paltz for two on Friday (3pm).
