TROY, N.Y. – Sophomores Erica Colucci and Abby Monroe each recorded complete games to lead the Utica College softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this afternoon, in non-league action from Doris Robison Field. With wins of 3-2 and 9-0, the Pioneers improve to 17-8 overall, while the Engineers drop to 16-12.

Utica got the scoring started in the top of the first inning in game one, as sophomore Alysa Rusell (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) plated senior Chelsea Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) with a double to the gap in left.

The Engineers answered with a run in the bottom of the frame, when sophomore Taylor Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) smacked a single to left that brought home freshman Morgan Kollmeier (Kennett Square, PA/Kennett) all the way from second.

Three scoreless innings ensued, before the visitors broke the tie in the fifth. Chelsea Monroe once again doubled to drive in pinch runner Meriah Beauvais (Stockbridge, NY/Stockbridge), to make it 2-1.

Kollmeier then delivered an RBI-double to tie the game (2-2) in the bottom half of the inning, bringing home junior Jena Servidone (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia), who led off the inning with a hit by pitch.

In the top of the sixth, the Pioneers once again created a run of separation on a run-scoring single off the bat of freshman catcher Kassidy Ogren (Albany, NY/Colonie Central). Her base-hit to left plated senior Meghan Matan (Latham, NY/Shaker).

Colucci (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) went the distance for Utica, allowing two runs (1 earned) on three hits in 7.0 innings. She struck out two without a walk. RPI starter Kristina Weltzin (Commerce Town, MI/Walled Lake Northern) was tagged with the loss, surrendering three runs (2 earned) on eight hits in 7.0 innings. She notched two strikeouts and two walks.

Game two saw the Pioneers score five runs in the third and four more in the fourth. Extra-base hits from junior Christy Traglia (Mohawk, NY/Mohawk), Russell and junior Courtney Fitzgerald (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) highlighted the outburst in the third.

Rensselaer freshman Lillian Kolehmainen (Fresno, CA/Bullard), who got the start at shortstop in game two, picked up a hit in her first collegiate at-bat, dumping a soft line drive into left.

Utica then got a two-run double from Matan and took advantage of a pair of RPI errors in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead.

Abby Monroe (Watertown, NY/General Brown) was credited with the shutout, allowing just two hits in 5.0 innings. She had three strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

The Engineers are back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they host Elmira College (3pm). Utica hosts Houghton tomorrow (3:30pm).
