Box Score 2 TROY, N.Y. – Seniors Alex Puglisi and Emilie Rogers each turned in strong pitching performances to lead Elmira College to a non-league doubleheader sweep of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), this afternoon at Doris Robison Field. With wins of 3-2 and 6-0, the Soaring Eagles improve to 12-12 overall, while the Engineers drop to 16-14.
Puglisi (Shelton, CT/Trumbull) allowed two runs (1 earned) on eight hits in an 8.0-inning game one victory. She struck out five and walked two.
Junior Megan Anderson (Little Falls, NJ/Passaic Valley) got the scoring started in the top of the third, driving in run while reaching on an RPI error. RPI freshman
Stephanie Caudle (Gainsville, FL/Gainsville) pulled the hosts even with an RBI-single in the bottom of the fourth.
Elmira freshman Emily Carlin (Riverside, CA/Arlington) broke the tie in the top of the seventh, singling to center to bring home junior Katie Dore (Manchester, NH/Marancook). The Engineers, who were down to their last out in the bottom of the seventh, knotted the game at 2-2, on a run-scoring hit by sophomore
Taylor Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland).
In the extra frame, Soaring Eagles sophomore Jacquelyn Heggie (Oxford, NY/Oxford Academy & Central School) drove a double down the line in right that brought home her sister – Julianne Heggie (Oxford, NY/Oxford Academy & Central School) for the eventual winning run.
Game two saw Elmira jump out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, as Carlin ripped a three-run homer to left. Anderson added an RBI-single in the second to make it 4-0.
The Soaring Eagles then added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cap the scoring in the game. Rogers (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) surrendered just two hits in earning the complete game shutout victory. She struck out six and walked one.
Three Engineers picked up two hits on the day, including freshman
Morgan Kollmeier (Kennett Square, PA/Kennett), who went 2 for 3 with a run scored in game one. Sophomore
Victoria Hepworth (Chester, MA/Holyoke) pitched well in relief in game two, allowing two runs (1 earned) on four hits in 4.2 innings.
The Engineers are back on the diamond on Saturday, when they host area-rival Union College for a doubleheader (1pm). Elmira visits Alfred tomorrow (3pm).
