Box Score 2 TROY, N.Y. – Junior
Kristina Weltzin threw two complete games, including a 5.0-inning no-hitter, to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Clarkson University, this afternoon at Doris Robison Field. With wins of 6-1 and 9-0 (5 inn.), the Engineers improve to 20-14 overall and finish their Liberty League schedule with a 10-2 mark. The Golden Knights conclude their season with a 6-26 record (2-10 Liberty League).
The sweep gives RPI a share of the Liberty League regular season title, as the University of Rochester also finished 10-2. The Engineers win a tie-breaker with the Yellowjackets and will host the four-team league tournament, which starts on Thursday (TBD).
Weltzin (Commerce Town, MI/Walled Lake Northern) gave up just one run on two hits in a combined 13.0 innings, striking out 15 and walking two. Notching complete games 12 and 13 on the season, the no-hitter in game two was her fourth shutout of the year.
Rensselaer scored first in game one, on an RBI-double to right center, off the bat of senior shortstop
Tori Hunt (Cheshire, MA/Hoosac Valley). Clarkson then plated a run in the top of the second on a double-steal to make it 1-1.
The Engineers took the lead for good in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by senior third baseman
Dani Grage (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon). RPI blew the game open in the sixth, scoring four runs on five hits. Freshman
Stephanie Caudle (Gainsville, FL/Gainsville) delivered a two-run single to center, before classmate
Morgan Kollmeier (Kennett Square, PA/Kennett) pulled a runs-scoring base-hit to right. Sophomore
Danielle Balestrini (Lake Placid, NY/Lake Placid) capped the scoring with a sac fly.
Game two saw RPI put together a pair of big innings to earn a mercy rule victory. The Engineer plated four runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run single by sophomore
Taylor Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland).
Morgan Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) came through with an RBI-single in the fifth, before Caudle reached on an error to make it 6-0. Freshman
Courtney McArthur (Coventry, RI/St. Mary's Academy) then cranked her first collegiate home run – a three run shot – to end the game.
Clarkson was held without a hit by Weltzin in the nightcap. She struck out seven and walked two.
Morgan Ten Eyck finished 3 for 3 with a run and two runs batted in, while McArthur went 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBI.
The Engineers are back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon, when they travel to Ithaca for a non-league doubleheader (3:30pm).
