Morgan Ten Eyck went a combined 7 for 7 as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball swept a doubleheader against Castleton State College, this afternoon at Robison Field. With wins of 4-0 and 10-0, the Engineers improve to 8-6 overall, while the Spartans drop to 1-5.
In game one, the Engineers scored the only run they would need in the top of the first, as sophomore
Danielle Balestrini (Lake Placid, NY/Lake Placid) reached on a bunt single and came around to score on a base-hit up the middle by junior
Jena Servidone (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia).
Following five straight scoreless innings, RPI broke out the bats in the sixth, scoring three times on four hits. With one away,
Morgan Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) and freshman
Courtney McArthur (Coventry, RI/St. Mary Academy) reached with singles. A fielder's choice and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with two outs. Balestrini then came through with an opposite field, line-drive single to plate a pair. Freshman
Morgan Kollmeier (Kennett Square, PA/Kennett) followed that up with a double to the gap in left, scoring Balestrini all the way from first and give the hosts a 4-0 advantage.
Junior righthander
Kristina Weltzin (Commerce Town, MI/Walled Lake Northern) went the distance for the Engineers, allowing just three hits (all singles) in 7.0 innings. She struck out six and walked three for her second shutout of the season and 11th of her collegiate career. Castleton State freshman Cassidy Tedeschi (Pascoag, RI/Burrillville) surrendered just one unearned run on seven hits in 4.0 innings, but was tagged with the loss (0-1).
Game two saw the Engineers jump out to a 6-0 lead after just two innings.
Taylor Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) highlighted RPI's four-run second with a two-run single, while Servidone and
Morgan Ten Eyck also delivered run-scoring hits.
The Engineers took advantage of a Castleton State error in the fifth to score two more runs, before
Morgan Ten Eyck capped the scoring with a two-run single to right – her seventh hit on the day.
From the circle, sophomore lefty
Victoria Hepworth (Chester, MA/Holyoke) settled in after walking a pair in the first inning to throw 4.0 innings of one-hit ball. She struck out two and walked three in total, while improve to 3-3 on the season. Servidone came on to pitch in the fifth and threw a 1-2-3 innings, including her first strikeout for RPI.
Morgan Ten Eyck went 4 for 4 with four runs batted in to pace the Engineers in game two. Senior
Tori Hunt (Cheshire, MA/Hoosac Valley) went 2 for 3 with three runs scored, while classmate
Dani Grage (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford) had a pair of hits in three at bats, with a run scored.
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, when they visit Skidmore College for a doubleheader to open Liberty League play (1pm).
