TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team is the top seed and host of the 2014 Liberty League Tournament, which begins on Thursday afternoon at Doris Robison Field and runs through Saturday. The Engineers will face fourth seed Skidmore, while second seed Rochester will open against Union.
 
Led by fourth-year head coach Amber Maisonet, the Engineers are 22-16 overall, going 10-2 in the Liberty League to earn a share of the Liberty League regular season title with Rochester. RPI won a tie-breaker over the Yellowjackets for the top spot in this week's tournament.
 
Rensselaer is led offensively by sophomore outfielder Morgan Ten Eyck (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland), who is batting .411 (44 for 107), with a home run, 10 doubles, 12 runs scored and 21 runs batted in. Senior captain and shortstop Tori Hunt (Cheshire, MA/Hoosac Valley) is second in hitting at .395 (45 for 114), with four triples, six doubles, 23 runs and 17 RBI. Freshman outfielder Morgan Kollmeier (Kennett Square, PA/Kennett) rounds out the top three batters at .357 (45 for 126), with a home run, a team-high 12 doubles, 29 runs and 17 RBI.
 
From the circle, junior Kristina Weltzin (Commerce Town, MI/Walled Lake Northern) is 13-6 with a 2.26 earned run average in 24 appearances (19 starts). She has allowed 112 hits in 130.1 innings, striking out 109, while walking 48. Sophomore Victoria Hepworth (Chester, MA/Holyoke) is 6-7 with a 3.04 ERA in 76.0 innings.
 
The Engineers are batting .304 as a team, collecting 11 home runs, six triples and 58 doubles. They are outscoring their opponents 197-127 this season. RPI hurlers have a combined 3.37 earned run average and are giving up a .248 batting average against.
 
The double-elimination league tournament has two games schedule for Thursday (2pm and 4:30pm), three on Friday (10am, 12:30pm and 3pm) and at least one on Saturday (10am and if nec.).
