Engineers set to host third straight Liberty League playoffs

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team will play host to the 2014 Liberty League Tournament, this weekend at Renwyck Field. The top-seeded Engineers take on fourth-seeded Vassar College in the first semifinal on Friday (2pm), before second-seeded William Smith College duels third-seeded Union College (4pm).
 
Rensselaer, which is led by 11th-year head coach Leslie DeLano, is currently 11-4 overall this season, finishing it's Liberty League schedule with a perfect 9-0 mark for the first time in school history.
 
Offensively, senior Meg Colitz (East Greenwich, RI/Amherst) has a team-best 60 points on 44 goals and 16 assists. Classmate Rachel Scofield (Albany, NY/Colonie) has 40 points on 19 goals and a team-high 21 assists. Junior Erin Riley (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South) rounds out the top three scorers with 25 goals and 14 assists for 39 points.
 
Junior Erin Amarello (Griswold, CT/St. Bernard School) has started all 15 games in the cage, going 11-4, with a 8.76 goals against average and a .438 save percentage. Sophomore Heather MacLauchlan (Somers, CT/Somers) has made four appearances and carries a 3.15 goals against average and a .636 save percentage.
 
As a team, the Engineers average 12.20 goals per game, while allowing just 8.40. Their +3.8 average scoring margin and 6.73 assists per game are both tops in the Liberty League. RPI ranks second overall in team goals against average and first among the four teams competing in this weekend's tournament. The Engineers win a conference-best 14.07 draw controls per game, which is 47th in the nation.
 
The two-day league tournament concludes on Saturday, with the championship game at 3pm. The winner of that contest receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, which begins on May 7.
